Happy New Year...2009
The winter season has come on like gang busters and we are happy to be half way through to the spring. Although the wind chill kept us indoors most days we have made the best of it and set off on adventures in the Parrish Hall of the Church. Dancing, exercise and all types of movement activities have taken over the play scape. Now if we can just change the rhythm of the songs to sound a little less like "Rudolph" The children have been outdoors (during the short reprieve from the icy arctic blasts). The winding walls of the ice igloo is testament to the children's creative fantasy play that occurs when the children are in the thick of it! Outside of the gates of FRCDN we have been on walks to the neighbourhood snow hills. Climbing and conquering the well packed mounds and sliding and bumping down have given each child a new appreciation for what Edmond Hillary must have felt on the peaks of Everest. Stories of paper and felt have been told under the umbrella of the roofed gazebo while children hung orange rind bird feeders from the shrubs and trees to keep our feathered friends fed through the nippy mornings.

In the week that followed our outdoor escape..Chinese New Year was rung in with the construc
tion of a beautiful fabric dragon , decorated and constructed by the children as a week-long emergent activity. The children wound their way through the daycare while listening to the lilting strains of Oriental music. Throughout the week , children painted, cut and glued gold and red paper into hanging lanterns, fans and origami shapes. Our special snack this week will include rice based goodies, fortune cookies and gold coins to cerebrate prosperity in this year of the Ox.

In the next few weeks we will be celebrating Fest
ival du Voyager by making snow sculptures and racing toboggans. On Friday Feb. 13th staff and children will serving a hot lunch. The menu includes Traditional Tortiere , Pea Soup, Bannock, and fresh fruit. Yummy!
Our Valentines Day party will also take place on Friday Feb. 13th. Children will be celebrating the day with caring exchanges of special notes and songs of friendship and love!

What a whirlwind of a summer and fall we have had at Fort Rouge Co-op. So many activities.... from a visit from the petting farm with goats, chickens, rabbits, lambs and roosters to visits to parks far and near.

The Family Fun Picnic in late June was an astounding success. We enjoyed the beautiful weather while munching on salads and hot dogs. The children frolicked moving through various stations to participate in the face painting and water play activities which the staff offered to celebrate the day. Parents, siblings and grandparents joined in the festive day ending with the Fubuki Daiko drummers giving a wonderful show of their talents.

The children enjoyed the elongated warm weather into the fall so much so, the weather in the last week in October gave us an opportunity for an outdoor snack and picnic. Too sad that the weather turned a wee bit colder by Halloween but it certainly didn't stop our friends from enjoying the spooky activities here at the daycare and beyond.

The daycare held the Annual General Meeting on October 22nd. The turn out of parents was very good. After dinner and reports from the usual suspects a new Board of Directors was voted in, filling the positions of the outgoing members. We are happy to announce Christa Boulton will be our new Chairperson with Kirk Cumming acting as Vice-chair. Cheryl Scott is taking on the Treasurers position and Jess Sawers is continuing in the position of Recording Secretary. Michelle Frykas, Roberta Stout, Allison McFie and Susan Strike are all members at large. Thank you to all for coming out to make the election so democratically successful.

Once again the Halloween Howl was a huge spooktacular event. Children and Staff dressed in their favorite scarey costumes. We celebrated the day with pumpkin excavation and Jack'o'lantern carving. Faces were painted and gooey snacks were eaten. A group of children visited the Grandmas and Grandpas at the Thorvaldson's home. All enjoyed stories and fiendish songs before returning to the daycare to share tricks and treats with the remaining ghouls!

FORT ROUGE CO-OP DAY NURSERY INC. JUNE 2008 NEWSLETTER

It's already mid June and it looks like we will be having a whirl-wind of a summer. The children have been gearing up with bug nets , insect cages and magnifying glasses ready to inspect each new emerging creature. The warming weather has also given us lots to look at in our surrounding parks and flower garden closer to home!

Garden Clean up and Beautification

A dozen parents and staff came out on June 7th to dig, shovel hoe, rake, cut and plant. Thank you to all the folks that showed up to turn our once overgrown and fenced garden beds into a space that is truly a work of art and inspiration. Early birds, Lyla, Fred and Christa showed up by 7:30 AM, got the coffee brewing and dug in to set the pace of the morning. By the time I arrived Fred had removed a number of rotting landscape ties and Christa had cleared a fair patch of weed (prairie turnips) from the first of many beds. Lyla was ankle deep in mud digging out and sorting out strawberry and perennials from the rest! I got busy with cutters and took out a number of small saplings. Susan and her Mom- Mary and Dad- Michael came soon after bearing hoes, rakes and spades. We knew there would be action and no turning back as Michael got busy with the wheelbarrow moving pea gravel into the play ground. Sharla and Mark arrived soon after ready to step in. Kristine soon followed and before we know it there were half a dozen busy hands pulling , hoeing and raking out the over-weeded beds. Ian and Andrea arrived and were soon part of the cleaning fray! Ian wielded an axe and cleared the stumps I had left , while Andrea and Julia swept up scattered pea gravel and sand to clear the space around the shed and cedars. Daniel and Rena arrived just in time to takeover some of the weeding as a few were ready to exchange their hoes for wheel barrows and a power sprayer and clear off the top of the roofed play area. Kirk got busy with the chain saw and circular saw to cut the new timbers that now surround the sandbox. Rick was quickly put to work repairing the picnic tables and spindles on the gate. Before long the annuals and perennials were in the beds and the rain barrel ready for use with the next rain fall. What a beautiful job. Everyone took a well deserved break for coffee and bagels and I for one, stood in awe of the transformation. It will be a few years before the plants and flowers reach their full potential but with the care and curiosity of our children it will be a "wonderland in progress". "Thanks everyone, the garden work party was a huge success!

Annual Family Fun Picnic
FRCDN will be holding the Annual Summer Fun Picnic on Thursday June 26th from 3:00 to 5:30 PM. This years Bar-b-q should prove to be exciting with a great line-up of entertainment and music. Entertainment includes "Inch the Clown" performing at 3:00PM . "Fubuki Daiko Drummers" will perform at 4:45PM. Staff have planned a variety of activities. Local MLA Jennnifer Howard will come for a visit and meet with our families. 3 1/2 year old Shane after seeing a picture of Jennifer on a poster near the top of Stradbrook Ave. said "Look it's my Mom." We look forward to seeing all our families at this yearly Sun Fun event.

SUMMER FIELD TRIPS AND OUTINGS
Staff of FRCDN are busy filling the calendar with summer time outings. Keep an eye on the calendar for postings both here and at the center. Some of these outings will include the summer time festivals at Old Market Square where the Fringe and Jazz festival offer up great entertainment for families.

DAILY HAPPENINGS
The children have been actively working on their camping skills. The once housekeeping center, has become the Fort Rouge Campground outfitted with bar-b-q and lanterns so the wee campers can maneuver through the teddy-bear infested forest! So far the indoor experience has been wonderful . We do look forward to moving the tent outdoors once the ground dries.
