Happy New Year...2009
The winter season has come on like gang busters and we are happy to be half way through to the spring. Although the wind chill kept us indoors most days we have made the best of it and set off on adventures in the Parrish Hall of the Church. Dancing, exercise and all types of movement activities have taken over the play scape. Now if we can just change the rhythm of the songs to sound a little less like "Rudolph" The children have been outdoors (during the short reprieve from the icy arctic blasts). The winding walls of the ice igloo is testament to the children's creative fantasy play that occurs when the children are in the thick of it! Outside of the gates of FRCDN we have been on walks to the neighbourhood snow hills. Climbing and conquering the well packed mounds and sliding and bumping down have given each child a new appreciation for what Edmond Hillary must have felt on the peaks of Everest. Stories of paper and felt have been told under the umbrella of the roofed gazebo while children hung orange rind bird feeders from the shrubs and trees to keep our feathered friends fed through the nippy mornings. In the week that followed our outdoor escape..Chinese New Year was rung in with the construction of a beautiful fabric dragon , decorated and constructed by the children as a week-long emergent activity. The children wound their way through the daycare while listening to the lilting strains of Oriental music. Throughout the week , children painted, cut and glued gold and red paper into hanging lanterns, fans and origami shapes. Our special snack this week will include rice based goodies, fortune cookies and gold coins to cerebrate prosperity in this year of the Ox.
In the next few weeks we will be celebrating Festival du Voyager by making snow sculptures and racing toboggans. On Friday Feb. 13th staff and children will serving a hot lunch. The menu includes Traditional Tortiere , Pea Soup, Bannock, and fresh fruit. Yummy!
Our Valentines Day party will also take place on Friday Feb. 13th. Children will be celebrating the day with caring exchanges of special notes and songs of friendship and love!
